Korean National Liberation Day
National Liberation Day of Korea 광복절 Have you noticed anything different on the streets of Korea in August? Do you see the korean national flags hanging prominently on the shops, restaurants and national monuments in Korea? The national flags, "Taegeukgi" decorate the streets to celebrate National Liberation Day of Korea, Gwangbokjeol (광복절) on 15 August. The literal meaning of Gwangbokjeol is " The day the light returned, " symbolizing the end of the Japanese Imperialism in 1945, and this holiday is also celebrated in North Korea as Liberation of the Fatherland Day (조국해방의 날). The day of Hope and Light Korea was officially liberated from the Japanese colony in 1945 when World War 2 ended. Japan declared unconditional surrender on this day, and allowed Korea to gain independence.
